This Week’s Big Acquisition: Sterigenics Picks Up Nelson Laboratories

Earlier this week Sterigenics International, LLC announced its acquisition of Nelson Laboratories, Inc. Private equity firms Warburg Pincus, LLC and GTCR were also involved in the transaction, the terms of which have not been disclosed.

As the largest U.S. provider of lifecycle microbiology testing services in the medical device, pharmaceutical and tissue industries, Nelson Labs has 570 employees (more than 300 are scientists and 60 microbiologists). The company operates 85 labs out of five buildings in Salt Lake City and will remain in its current location. Sterigenics’ microbiological and analytical testing services will be combined with Nelson Labs, creating the largest fully integrated sterilization and lab services firm worldwide, according to a press release from Sterigenics.

The combined entities will use the Nelson Labs name in the market and operate as a standalone business unit within Sterigenics.
