IoT, Artificial Intelligence and Device Design: 2020 Healthcare Predictions

As we near the end of the year, there will be many predictions for the year (and next five years) to come. Some of the common technology themes are in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning and cybersecurity. According to Roger Mazzella, a medical device software professional at Qt, the healthcare industry will see expansion in two key areas:

  1. Data and privacy challenges as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) play a role in early disease detection.
    • AI and ML potential: Technologies that help doctors identify the first signs of cancer and degenerative diseases. Devices with AI and ML capabilities will be able to process and compare much more image data. However, it has been noted that although AI adoption is accelerating in medtech, especially wearables, we still have a long way to go.
  2. More user-friendly device designs with smartphone-like attributes that consider the needs and preferences of the younger generation of clinicians.
    • An evolution in device design includes:
      • Design flexibility to accommodate different levels of technical expertise
      • The ability for a single device to switch between different user interfaces (i.e., traditional controls and touchscreen controls)
      • Continued expansion of design to enable more home use and remote monitoring.
