Boston Scientific Acquisition Beefs Up Neuromodulation Business
In a move to expand its neuromodulation portfolio, Boston Scientific has acquired Cosman Medical for an undisclosed amount. The privately held company manufactures radiofrequency ablation systems for neurosurgery and pain management.
“We are pleased to join the Boston Scientific team and help expand access to leading treatments for chronic pain,” said Eric Cosman, Jr, Ph.D., scientific director at Cosman Medical in a press release. “This acquisition comes at a time when our society is recognizing the impact of relying extensively on opioids to treat pain and is looking for additional approaches.”
An estimated one in three Americans experience chronic pain, with more than 100 million people being partially or completely disabled by pain. Radiofrequency ablation is an outpatient procedure used to treat chronic pain that involves the application of heat to small areas of nerve tissue in order to interrupt pain signals.
Cosman Medical will be integrated into Boston Scientific’s neuromodulation business.
